FAQ

Learning English in a foreign country is sure to bring up many questions. As you prepare to move abroad and study English in Canada, make sure that you have access to the information you need. Check out some of our students most common questions! Have one that is not listed below? Feel free to ask me! Click here to email me!

How long does it take to finish one level of English?

Each level of ESL takes approximately 4 weeks to complete. In order to move to the next level, students must attend no less than 80% of classes and achieve a score of 80% on their tests.

Are SEC levels equivalent to any official standards?

The SEC ESL level system is standardized by international language benchmarks.  All testing material and methods are based on Canadian Language Benchmarks.

How are tests marked?

Tests are graded by the 12 point scale as specified by the Canadian Language Benchmarks.

Unlike some schools that deviate from regimented and consistent testing strategies, we have designed our curriculum to correlate with international standards. This applies to speaking tests as well as general ESL. At SEC, you will be able to mark your improvement with confidence.

What if my course is too hard or too easy?

Our placement testing system is extensive, grading each student in grammar, written English, comprehension and speaking abilities. If a student does not feel they have been placed correctly, our academic managers are available to discuss their concerns. One method we use to avoid this is to allow our students to differ in level for their morning and afternoon classes. We know that sometimes you may have better abilities with written or spoken English. At SEC, we design your program for your abilities.

Do I have to be at a minimum level to study English at SEC?

There is no level too low to start studies at SEC. A great option is to take our placement test prior to your arrival. This will give you a better idea of your length of study.

Is SEC affiliated with any governing bodies?

Yes, we are a member of Languages Canada and partners with a number of other distinguished institutions. Click here for more information.

Can I change my program after I arrive?

Every student is different but it most cases, we are able to help you with this request. Your student counselor will be available to help you each and every step of the way.

Do I need a student visa to study English in Canada at SEC?

That depends on where you are from. Citizens of many countries are required to obtain a visa in order to enter Canada.

If you are a citizen of the European Union, you most likely do not need a Study Permit unless your period of study exceeds 6 months.  There are exceptions to this rule so click here to visit the website of Canadian immigration for an up to date list to confirm.

What if I want to work while I study?

SEC’s sister college, UCCBT offers amazing co-op opportunities for advance, long term students.

What if my visa gets denied?

If your visa is denied, you have a few options.

  1. Apply a second time; many students have better luck with a second application.
  2. Request a refund from SEC. Tuition fees are 100% refundable in the case of visa denial. All that we ask is that you supply your proof of denial as issued by the Canadian Embassy.

Can SEC sponsor me to come to Canada?

As an educational institute, we do not personally sponsor any prospective students. Once you have paid your tuition fees, you will be issued a Letter of Acceptance which can be submitted to the Canadian embassy in support of your application. We are happy to help you in the visa process by providing answers to your questions.

Do I have to pay a deposit before I can apply for a visa?

A minimum deposit of 30% of tuition fees must be received before we issue a Letter of Acceptance.

When are my course fees due?

Course fees are payable upon registration but are accepted with no problem up until four weeks prior to your arrival.

Are course fees refundable?

Our refund policy is available here.

Do students get vacation time?

Each student studying with us for more than one month may have a two week vacation provided that they make their request in writing ahead of time. Some limitations may apply.

What about school organized trips? Do they count as official vacation time?

Trips offered and promoted by SEC that will cause you to miss a day of school do not count as your vacation leave. However, you will be required to write any missed tests or assignments.

When is the best time to come to learn English in Canada?

The best time to visit Canada depends on the activities you enjoy and what you expect to do. Many who love winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding would be better suited to spend time at the Vancouver campus for the winter. Toronto offers many cultural activities throughout the year, but summer and fall are definitely this city’s seasons.
